To identify new germplasm of the forage legume Cratylia argentea, a collection expedition was conducted in the states of Goias, Mato Grosso, and Tocantins in Brazil, where the center of diversity of the species is located. The populations of C. argentea varied in size, from isolated plants to populations of more than 500 plants. In dense populations, plant stems were thinner than those of isolated plans, which were sometimes more than 20 cm in diameter. The populations identified were located between 12 and 16 S, and between 46 and 58 W, 180 to 810 m above sea level, in soils that were mostly well-drained sandy loam, with variable chemical characteristics. Folowers were typically pink-violet (one population had white flowers) and fructification and seed production were abundant. Recovery of C. argentea plants after burning, cutting, or grazing was good, favored by this species's high leaf retention and tolerance of pests and diseases. |

This study aimed to investigate influences of maize seed vigor on crop cycle. Four maize seed lots with different seed vigor levels were sowed in the field and evaluated daily, computing growing-degree-days for each plot to reach each phenological stage. Differences among treatments during plant development were observed, which occurred at emergence, 4th, 8th, 12th fully expanded leaves and at milk stages. Therefore, it is possible to affirm that seed vigor has impacts on crop cultivation cycle, with plants from lower vigor seeds presenting a delayed development compared to higher vigor seeds. However, such differences tend to disappear during the reproductive phase. |
